The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company’s (ADNOC) commitment to 100% HSE in operations and processes gets further evidenced by their Non-Accidental Death (NAD) Investigation course.

Developed internally by the ADNOC GHSE and Training Team, a copy of the NAD investigation course was submitted to the Institute for approval and subsequently reviewed by Alan Dell MBE for the Executive, Eira Reed for the Memberships Committee Chair and selected senior Members.

Based on reviews, a decision was made to approve without recommendation subject to review team feed-back on the pilot session of the course scheduled for June 2020 via MS Teams.

The decision to approve ‘as is’ was a first in its own right since no course submitted for approval had ever survived the process without an advisory recommendation of some sort.

Another first was on its way when the quality of the course material was exceeded only by Dr Tayab’s delivery of it. Subsequently, those who attended the remote session on behalf of the Institute (i.e. the above plus two RDC representatives) were unanimous in a decision to approve. That decision also saw ADNOC become the first Oil & Gas Company Globally ever to receive any such approval from the Institute.

Designed to provide the unique skills that the investigation of non-accidental death requires, the pilot course was well received by over 200 attendees from ADNOC and Group Companies. Primarily developed for Occupational Health and Medical Physicians, the range of attendees (i.e. spanning operations, management, HSE and medical) further confirmed that the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company’s drive for a sustainable safety culture knows no bounds.

Non Accidental Death (NAD) Defined and Clarified
NAD applies to the death of a company or contractor employee where the death was not work related but, occurred in the work environment or at employer controlled accommodation. Such a death arises from a suicide or a medical condition and is only deemed a NAD if investigation rules out any company or system related cause.
